VelEspaña- International Classical Guitar Competition  

10-13 November 2023 at Fran Korun Koželjski Music School, Velenje, Slovenia 

The Embassy of Spain in Slovenia, Fran Korun Koželjski Music School (Velenje, Slovenia) and the EGTA Society of Slovenia are organizing the Second International Classical Guitar Competition of the Embassy of Spain in Slovenia. The competition is dedicated to Spanish and Ibero-American music for classical guitar.   

The Ibero-American region consists of the following countries beside Spain: Portugal, Andorra, Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Columbia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Porto Rico, Uruguay and Venezuela.

Age categories 

1st category: born in 2013 or later 

2nd category: born in 2011 or 2012  

3rd category: born in 2009 or 2010 

4th category: born between 2004 and 2008 

5th category: no age limit 


The repertoire has to consist of music by Spanish and Ibero-American composers from any music period. At least two (2) compositions have to be written originally for the guitar.  

The repertoire can include one (1) arrangement of a work by a Spanish or an Ibero-American composer not originally written for the guitar.  

The duration of the repertoire for each category:  

1st category: not more than 5 minutes  

2nd category: not more than 8 minutes 

3rd category: not more than 11 minutes 

4th category: not more than 15 minutes 

5th category: 

-First Round: not more than 15 minutes, one composition must be chosen from the list of obligatory compositions (see below) 

-Final Round: not more than 20 minutes (the three best competitors of the 1st round qualify for the Final Round)

First Prize: €250, concert at Summer guitar school Črnomelj 2024, concert at EGTA’s Day 2024. 

Second Prize: €175 

Third Prize: €100 

5th category: First three competitors receive trophies and medals. 

  • First Prize:   A concert at the XIII FESTIVAL DE LA GUITARRA DE SEVILLA 2024 (Spain) with covered travel and accommodation costs and a concert at Festival Velenje, Season Klasika 2024/2025 
  • Second Prize: A concert at the International Guitar Week Postojna (Slovenia) and €250 
  • Third Prize: €250 
  • A special prize for the best Slovenian guitarist in the Final: a concert in the Rasgueado Concert Series 2024 in Ljubljana 
  • A special award for the best interpretation of Spanish composition 


The jury will be international and consist of 5 established guitarists and guitar teachers 

Rules of competition 

  • The competition is open to the public 
  • The decisions of the jury are final. 
  • The entire program must be performed by heart. 
  • The competitors of the 5th category cannot repeat compositions from the First Round in the Final. 
  • In case of exceeding the allowed duration, the jury has the right to stop the performance. 
  • The jury retains the right not to award a prize if no competitor meets the required level of playing. 
  • The results will be published on the competition’s website and at the info point of Fran Korun Koželjski Music School in Velenje. 
  • The organizer retains the right to change the rules of the competition in case of force majeure.
